Women in Martial Arts -
Where Are they?

After 30 years of teaching martial arts and adding floor instructors to my program, I still see only about 10% of my classes attended by women.  Why?  Is it because of the high ratio of men in martial arts that intimidates women, or is it the belief that "it won't happen to me"?  It more than likely will happen to women as opposed to men.  Due to our current economy and population growth, attacks on women have increased.  Not only from strangers but from people they know and even trust.
     Our way of teaching women is through all three levels of combat which includes awareness, confidence and realistic self-defense.  By training in Kickboxing for example, a person learns aerobic drills for stamina.   This in turn leads to mental sharpness and confidence, not to mention low leg kicks and boxing punches that can help in a street attack.
     The Filipino Arts (Arnis) offers the best in the business as far as defense against empty hand, stick, club, and even knife attacks.  It deals with a modern world and is ever evolving towards simplicity.  Arnis is not hidden in massive techniques or the mystic.
     Finally floorwork, (admittedly my weaker side).  It is almost impossible to get women to try floor techniques.  Are they afraid that their training partner on the floor will smother them?  But isn't this what they really need?  Overcoming your fears in a studio is a great step to confidence in the real world.  In the studio or gym if things get too uncomfortable you can always stop.  Outside, unless you are prepared, it stops when your attacker decides it is over, not you!

How Arnis Can Enhance Your Martial Arts Skill

 I’ve been training in Arnis, Filipino Martial Arts, Eskrima or whatever else it is being called, for 30 years.  Most people say the same thing when I explain that arnis is the generic Tagalong word for stick fighting.  They say “what if I don’t have a stick?”  I try to explain how arnis starts with sticks for many reasons;

    1.  The fear of a weapon being wielded at you is generally greater then the fear of an empty hand.  This teaches you an increased awareness level at the beginning of your training.

     2.  The speed of a stick strike is much faster then that of the hand.  This makes it easier to deal with empty hand after you are comfortable with sticks.

      3.  Sticks and knives are still used in the modern world.  Therefore your arnis training keeps you current, not stuck in the past.  When was the last time you heard of an attack with a set of swords, kamas, nunchakus or other ancient weapons?

Feel free to respond to this by email or in class, as I hope each month to write an article on arnis.  Your comments both good and bad are always welcome!
